Bianca and Xa-Kye
Bianca and Xa-Kye’s story is provided by New Legacy Charter School (NLCS), a safe and small learner center high school serving all students, including parenting and pregnant teens. NLCS offers core classes and a Real World Learning curriculum to support students in their post-secondary goals. Along with the high school, NLCS has an award winning Early Learning Center for the children of the teen parents.

When Bianca was pregnant, she knew she did not want to continue at her old high school, so her midwife provided some recommendations, with New Legacy as the top recommendation. With Bianca’s hard work, leadership, and desire to improve her and her son’s life, New Legacy is lucky she chose to join our family!
Bianca is thankful to the ELC with the education they are giving Xa’Kye. Her son loves the circle time with singing, reading, and painting. One time at her grandmother’s house playing with his cousins, Xa’Kye shared a toy; Bianca realized it was because of the work Perla did with her son in the infant room.

For Bianca, she credits much of her success to the staff with their one on one support and constantly staying on track with her work. She especially loves her parenting class. They have guest speakers and teach valuable lessons, but the best part is hearing from other moms: she feels a connection with them and doesn’t feel alone.

Last semester, Bianca chose a project on drug addiction because she saw its effects on a family member. This personal connection made her want to “go deeper and get more information” on this subject. Learning how to “dive deep” into a project will serve her well in her future career. Bianca is interested in the field of dentistry. If you know of someone in this field for her to shadow and learn from, just send me an email!
As a senior, Bianca’s words of advice to other students ring true: “Give it your all – don’t give up. If you are stuck – don’t be scared. New Legacy gave me confidence to ask for help because staff will help you any time. The staff taught me to advocate for myself; you can do it too.”
